Hello shipmates,

We hope this newsletter finds everyone well and not suffering too badly from winter.  Some parts of the US have been hit badly with snow and ice, and other parts have had tornadoes.  Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, we had a very mild December and January, but February has been cold.  There have been a couple of ice storms, but no snow to speak of.  We spent Feb. 19-23 in Gatlinburg TN with Ronnie (BT1, 63-65) and Jerry Ann Holt.  They live in Alabama so Gatlinburg was a good midpoint to meet.  The weather was nice enough that we could even sit outside our hotel rooms on a porch to chat.  We probably gained a few pounds and definitely parted with some of our money there.  Great food and great shopping!

We have been working with the Seattle area Convention and Visitors Bureau about having a reunion in the area in October 2008.  We received several proposals from hotels.  Most were too expensive for our group, but there are two that are within our requested price range for rooms.  We’ve talked with representatives from both and they sound really good.  Kathy Barokas, wife of Morgan (RDM3, 45-46) will be visiting both hotels and will report back to us on what she thinks of them.  Hopefully, when the next newsletter goes out, we’ll have a contract.

In the last newsletter, we didn’t remember who won the British Naval Compass that was donated by Jack London.  We have since heard from Paul Pearson (SN, 58-62) who was the winner.  We had a phone message while we were in Gatlinburg that Jim Shannon (BT2, 64-67) had received the ship model he won in the raffle.  He was very pleased with it.

We’ve raffled a custom built ship’s model at each reunion.  Ticket sales were down this time, and we are rethinking whether or not to continue with the ship model raffles.  The models are built AFTER the reunion to be a replica of what the ship looked like when the winner was aboard.  Ticket price has been $10.00.  It was not required to attend the reunion to win.  If any of you have any strong feelings one way or the other about continuing to raffle ship models at future reunions, please let us know.  Our contact information is on the last page of this newsletter.

We’d like to thank all of you who have sent us your email and mailing address changes.  It helps a LOT!  If your email address, mailing address or phone number changes, please let us know as soon as possible.  Postal returns can get really expensive and there is talk of yet another postage increase.  We want to be sure everyone receives their newsletters.  We’ve had some postal returns with no forwarding addresses.  We search online to try to find new addresses, but there are some people who no longer receive newsletters because we simply can’t find them.

                                                                        Fair winds and smooth sailing!

Ship History on Website

Gary O’Neil (ETR3, 63-66), with help from several other shipmates, has been working on fleshing out the history on the website.  He has done a terrific job!  Bob Miller (MM3, 62-65), Paul Machart (YN3, 62-65) and Tom Byrne (RM2, 60-62) have been a big help with their contributions.  Right now, the history is available to anyone who has internet access.  At some point, we may offer paper copies.  If we do that, we will charge for postage and paper.

Gary has written up the following:

Our History

Major progress has been made on our TUCKER History.  The original posting in 2004 was a text document of 21 pages.  Shortly after the Beaumont reunion in 2006, the posted history had grown to 42 pages with lots of pictures, maps and additional information.  The latest posting is even better and has expanded the history to 57 pages.  A new revision is in the works.

We Are Not Done!

We need your help!  Do you have recollections, pictures, documents, or just plain corrections that should be added?

Get Involved!

We can make the TUCKER History better than any other ship history out there.

If you can contribute in any way:

Hello Shipmates,

Over the past few years I‘ve been able to collect several cruise books for the USS Henry W. Tucker. I’m considering undertaking the task of having them professionally scanned and put on CDs. Doing this would enable me to make CD copies of the cruise book available to others.

To have them professionally scanned would be costly, but manageable. Copying them to CDs and mailed would be an additional cost.

Before I start I’d be interested in finding out how many shipmates are interested in obtaining a CD of a particular book(s).

I estimate your final cost for each CD would be in the range of $20.00 .This is based on requests for at least 10 CDs per book. (Final cost will be based on total participants)

The CDs would more than likely be in PDF or HTML formats.

Cruise Books for the USS. Henry W. Tucker range from 1953 to 1973 a total of 12 books.

I’ll inform you in our next Newsletter if I’ll be undertaking this project based on your response.
