John Gommengenger
Retired Navy Cmdr. John Andrew "Jack" Gommengenger, 85, a
resident of Annapolis for 25 years and previously of Williamsville, N.Y., d=
ied
of natural causes June 3 at Doctors' Community Hospital in Lanham after a b=
rief
illness.
Cmdr. Gommengenger was born June 20, 1920, in Rochester, N.Y., where=
he
attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He graduated from the Naval Academ=
y in
1941. Later he attended the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers
University and received a master of business administration degree from the
University of Oklahoma.
A veteran of World War II, he retired from the Navy in 1962. His last
assignment was as executive officer and associate professor of naval scienc=
e at
the University of Oklahoma. He received the American Defense Service Medal =
with
one star, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Europe-Africa-Middle East
Campaign Medal, the Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver and two bro=
nze
stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Medal, the
Philippine Liberation Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the Bronze =
Star
with Combat V and the DesLant Battle Efficiency Plaque.
After retiring from the military, he worked for Marine Midland Bank =
in
New York and National Bank of Washington in D.C. Subsequently, he was a real
estate agent at Giddings in Annapolis.
Cmdr. Gommengenger served on the vestry at Calvary Episcopal Church =
in
Williamsville, the financial board of All Hallows Episcopal Church in
Davidsonville and the fiscal review board at Collington Episcopal Life Care
Community in Mitchellvile. He enjoyed fishing, golf and bowling and was a
client advocate at Crownsville Hospital Center.
On June 11, 1946, he married Valeria Ruth Gommengenger, who died Mar=
ch
3, 2005.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Ann Nisbet of Clarence, N.Y.,
Kathryn Lynn Glovack of Perrysburg, N.Y., and Kristin Marie Colligan of
Fairfax, Va.; and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of
Gloucester St. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at All Hallows Chapel, =

W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. Burial will be in All Hallows Cemetery. In =
