Obituary – December 2= 9, 2004

Funeral services for Rear A= dm. Sam Howard Moore, 86, of Marshall will be = held 4 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will= be in Colonial = Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Sullivan-Heaster Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5-7= p.m. Wednesday at the Travis Street Chapel of Sullivan-Heaster Funeral Home.

Rear Adm. Moore died at 10:= 24 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Marshall. He was born April 11, 1918, in Rugby, th= e son of Sam H. and Myrtle Lee Griffin Moore. He attended elementary school in Deport, and graduated from Bogata High School, Paris Junior College and East Texas State University, now Texas A&M, in Commerce.

He was later honored as Distinguished Alumnus of Paris Junior College and East Texas State University.

Rear Adm. Moore was commiss= ioned as an ensign in the U. S. Navy five months after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in many assignments at sea = and ashore during his 35-year career.

His at-sea assignments incl= uded command of mine sweepers, destroyers and guided missile cruisers.

From 1970 to 1977, Rear Adm. Moore was stationed in Washing= ton D.C., retiring from the mil= itary on June 30 of that year, with more than 30 service medals.

Rear Adm. Moore and his wife moved to Marshall<= /st1:City> following his retirement, and he became active in local civic affairs.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Moore of Marshall; his daughter Margaret Ann Goldstein of Atascade= ro, Calif.; two granddaughters; two sisters, Hazel Johnson of Paris and Lois Le= slie of Talking Rock, Ga.
